BRIEF DESCRIPTION A small evergreen tree reaching a height of 10-20 m. Fruits are up to 7 cm x 20 cm. The tree resembles C. nitida but the leaves are usually smaller. USES Its nuts are chewed as a stimulant, powdered nuts are made into refreshing beverages, or an essentail oil extracted. The nuts contain about 2% caffeine, 9% protein, and 75% carbohydrates. They also contain the glucoside, kolanin, that is used as a heart stimulant. GROWING PERIOD Perennial. COMMON NAMES Abata kola, Evbe, Ibong, Oji-awusa, Obi abata. FURTHER INF Scientific synonym: C. pseudo-acuminata, Sterculia acuminata. Abata kola can be host of coconut pests. Yields of nuts may be 0.5-2 t/ha. Mentioned as a useful agroforestry species.
